Introduction & Question

Hi everyone, my name is Kelly, I am new here, but SO glad I found this site!

I am a Stay at home mother of 3, and I love candles, I thought I would try making my own for gifts this year for Christmas. I thought if it went well, I could start selling them at craft shows or something like that.

Does anyone here make their candles to sell?

How do they sell (demand)

Where do you sell them?

How much do you charge?

Any info at all would be appreaciated, I dont plan on making a million, but a little extra income would be great.

Thanks in advance for any info :)

RE: Introduction & Question

HI KELLY...I JUST STARTED MAKING CANDLES IN OCTOBER. SO FAR SALES HAVE BEEN GOOD, BUT I'M ALWAYS LOOKING FOR WAYS TO SELL MORE CANDLES. THE FIRST TIME I ORDERED WAX IT WAS THE CONTAINER WAX-SUPERIOR SOFT AND I WAS ABLE TO GET ALOT OF CANDLES MADE WITH JUST 1 CASE OF IT. THEN THE SECOND TIME I ORDERED I GOT THE SOY WAX IN FLAKES AND WENT THROUGH IT IN NO TIME FLAT!! SO I MUCH RATHER USE THE CONTAINER WAX PLUS ONCE IT HARDENS THE TOP OF THE CANDLES ARE MUCH SMOOTHER THEN THE SOY WAX. I HAD TO RE-MELT THE TOPS BUT ONLY RE-MELT ONCE WITH THE SUPERIOR SOFT WITH THE SOY WAX I HAD TO KEEP RE-MELTING TO MAKE THE SURFACE SMOOTH. I'M STILL VERY NEW TO THIS AND AM ALWAYS LOOKING AND READING FOR IMPROVEMENTS! BROOKSTONE'S SCENTS ARE GREAT BUT I HATE THE TIME IT TAKES TO RECEIVE YOUR SHIPMENT. AND WAITING FOR WAX IS UNREAL. I'VE WAITED 3 WEEKS FOR WAX TO BE SHIPPED. SO I'VE STARTED ORDERING WAX FROM A COMPANY THAT IS IN MY STATE! RIGHT NOW I'M MAKING 3 DIFFERENT SIZES OF CONTAINER CANDLES BUT AFTER CHRISTMAS WILL BE LOOKING INTO MAKING VOTIVES AND MOLDS. I LOVE MAKING CANDLES ITS SO MUCH FUN (WHICH I COULD QUIT MY FULL-TIME JOB..LOL) ANYWAY IF I CAN HELP YOU IN ANY WAY PLEASE EMAIL ME AT parra4_2000@yahoo.com WILL TRY AND ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT HAVE. ANY ADVICE IS GOOD! THIS GRAPEVINE IS NICE BUT I'VE NOTICED THAT NOT TOO MANY PEOPLE DO REPLY. LOOKING FORWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU. GOOD LUCK...TRUDI

Thanks for replying Trudi.

Where do you sell your candles? and how much do you charge?

I have no idea on where to start with either. I thought of maybe selling at craft shows.

I kept your email address in case I ever run in to a problem, or need to ask a question :)

Thanks Again for responding!

Kelly

I have 3 different size jars that I make. 12oz jar I sell for $5.00, 8oz jar for $4.00 and a 3oz jar for $3.00. I think that I probably could sell them for more but for just starting out I didn't want to be too expensive. I made order forms up and my husband and Mother took them to each of their places they work. My brother also and a friend did the same. They all have really sold alot of them for me. I also took the order form to my place of employment but didn't really sell too many..kinda weird I thought since it was my work. But anyway I've also sold some just by word of mouth. My next step is taking them to some local arts and craft stores we have here in town and seeing if I can put some there. I think I will increase the prices though some. I also wanted to do some bazaars for Christmas but didn't have enought candles made up to go. I have 14 scents right now that I sell, my biggest problem is everyone wants to smell samples so I'm trying to make up samples now. I bought some 1oz jars to use. I really think that there is alot of potential in selling candles and making some decent money its just getting them out there and making candles that really have a strong cold and hot scent throw. Its a learning experience and I'm constantly learning something new!

Hi kelly,

I too am just starting this new great adventure of making candles!!  I love it!  I sell my votives for 1.50 or 6/$8, 6 oz. $6, 10 oz. 9$ and 16 oz. $14.  I also refill containers for a small fee if I think they are of good quality and can stand up to being burned in again.  My family and friends have really helped me get started.  Plus it's a great time of year, I've already had quite a few orders for Christmas gifts.  Good luck!!  Keep us posted.!!
